ST. JOHN'S, October 7, 2002 -- Gerry Byrne, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $233,800 for three Francophone groups in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The financial assistance announced today demonstrates the commitment of the Government of Canada to foster the development of the French language and culture in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Byrne.

The financial assistance is allocated to the following Francophone groups:

--$65,000 to the Gaboteur Inc. for the daily operations of the only Francophone newspaper in Newfoundland and Labrador,
Le Gaboteur
--$77,800 to Franco-Jeunes de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador Inc. for its 2002-2003 programming
--$91,000 to the Association francophone de St-Jean for its 2002-2003 programming

Financial assistance for these projects is provided through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs, five-year agreements (1999-2004) whose objective is to support the development of official-language communities living in a minority situation.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
