The Government of Canada Announces Support for the Salon du livre d'Edmundston Inc.

EDMUNDSTON, October 15, 2002 -- Member of Parliament (Madawaska-Restigouche) Jeannot Castonguay, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced financial support of $3,777 for the Salon du livre d'Edmundston Inc.

"The Government of Canada is committed to the promotion and development of French language in all parts of Canada," said Mr. Castonguay. "Today's announcement demonstrates that we strongly support organizations, like the Salon du livre d'Edmundston Inc., that help build a strong and proud French-language communities."

This funding will allow the organization to set up workshops, given by authors attending the Salon, for high school students in District 3.

Financial assistance for this project is provided through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Language Support Programs: five-year agreements (1999-2004), whose objective is to support the development of official-language communities living in minority situations.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
