The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Quebec Learner's Network

HULL, November 5, 2002 -- Marcel Proulx, Member of Parliament (Hull-Aylmer), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $36,000 in funding for the Quebec Learner's Network. The funds will help finance a pilot project to develop a distance support network for children with attention deficit disorders in the rural regions of Quebec.

"The government of Canada is proud to be associated with an organization that allows rural communities in Quebec, and the Anglophone community in particular, to have access to quality services," said Mr. Proulx. "It is important for official-language communities to live and thrive in the best possible conditions, even in regions far from large urban centres."

In cooperation with various social services, this two-year initiative will account for the problems some children have concentrating and begin implementing appropriate solutions. Various activities and workshops will be organized and various aids using a range of technology will be developed to create a support service for parents in distant communities.

The Quebec Learner's Network provides training and distance learning opportunities through a computer network to the Anglophone community living in distant regions of Quebec.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under its Official Languages Support Programs. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
