The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Francophone Groups in Prince Edward Island

SUMMERSIDE, November 12, 2002 -- Joe McGuire, Member of Parliament (Egmont), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $29,300 for four Francophone groups in Prince Edward Island. Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that is committed to the development of French and Acadian culture in Prince Edward Island," said Mr. McGuire. "Today's announcement demonstrates that we strongly support organizations that help build strong and proud French-language communities."

Financial assistance is allocated to the following Francophone groups:

--$13,300 to La Belle-Alliance Ltée for the promotion of Acadian and Francophone culture in the Summerside-Miscouche region.
--$8,000 to the Comité culturel de la région Évangéline for a project that consists of offering a variety of entertainment products in French, of increasing the visibility of Acadian and Francophone artists and craftsmen, and of promoting the cultural and arts sectors of the Évangéline region.
--$6,000 to the Association du musée acadien for a project on Acadian heritage programming.
--$2,000 to the Conseil scolaire communautaire Évangéline for a project to raise awareness on the importance of reading in French, to increase the promotion of Francophone authors in Prince Edward Island and to the enrichment of the French language and culture.

The Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs are five-year agreements (1999-2004) whose objective is to support the development of official-language communities living in a minority situation.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
