Canadian Heritage Supports the Regroupement des Universités de la Francophonie Hors Québec

MONCTON, February 3, 2003 -- Claudette Bradshaw, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $81,000 for the Regroupement des Universités de la Francophonie Hors Québec (RUFHQ).

"This type of initiative allows a sharing of information and tools for Francophone communities. This is a good example that demonstrates that new technologies can bring Francophone communities across the country together and build bridges between them, thereby supporting their development," said Minister Bradshaw.

The goals of the RUFHQ are to encourage complementarity between member universities and to promote national and international cooperation to develop teaching in French at the post-secondary level in Canada.

Funding will go to the organization's Publishing Support Committee. The Committee deals with the production and publication of French-language teaching material, the development and production of multimedia teaching material, and the dissemination of research in French.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Official Language Support Programs. Funding for this program was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and therefore built into the existing fiscal framework
