Government of Canada Announces Financial Support for Geordie Productions

MONTREAL, June 16, 2003 -- Yvon Charbonneau, Member of Parliament (Anjou Rivières-des-Prairies), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $40,000 for Geordie Productions to help finance its audience diversification strategy. The funds will be used to produce a play for Anglophone audiences of all ages, and to tour it throughout several regions of Quebec.

"Improving minority-language access to cultural activities is a priority for the Government of Canada," said Mr. Charbonneau. "I congratulate those behind this initiative for giving more Canadians a chance to live and thrive in their language."

These funds will allow Geordie Productions to extend beyond its specialty of children's theatre by developing a theatrical production for general audiences. The play will tour for seven weeks through English-speaking Quebec communities, including Gaspé, Magdalen Islands, Sept-Îles, and Chibougamau.

Geordie Productions is a non-profit organization with 20 years' experience in English-language children's theatre.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Official Languages Support Programs.

Funding for this project was provided for in the 2003 federal Budget.
