Government of Canada Provides Financial Support to the Francophone Community in B.C.

VANCOUVER, June 25, 2003 -- Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament (Vancouver Centre), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $501,646 for two Francophone community groups in British Columbia.

"The Government of Canada is proud to acknowledge the vitality of the Francophone community in British Columbia," said Dr. Fry. "This funding will enable these organizations to respond to the needs of the Francophone community and assure a French cultural presence in our province."

The Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique will receive $401,646 to help finance its programming for 2003-2004. The Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique has become the foremost Francophone organization in British Columbia, offering support services and development to the community in the following areas: communications, culture, education, economy, youth, and community action.

The Conseil culturel et artistique francophone de la Colombie-Britannique will receive funding of $100,000 to ensure its programming for this year. The Conseil culturel et artistique francophone de la Columbie-Britannique is a provincial assembly of Francophone associations representing the cultural and artistic interests of British Columbia's Francophone community, at the local and provincial levels.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
