Government of Canada announces funding for the Francophone community in Saskatchewan

REGINA, July 9, 2003 -- Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament (Wascana), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $1.75 million for the Francophone community in Saskatchewan in 2003-2004.

"Canada's two official languages are at the heart of Canadian identity contributing largely to our success and prosperity," said Mr. Goodale. "The Government of Canada's contribution to providing minority official-language communities with the tools they need for continued growth is an important part of maintaining our culture."

The investment will enable organizations to represent the Francophone community in Saskatchewan by delivering services, enhancing Francophone culture, and creating special projects to support community development. Twenty-five organizations will receive funding, for a total of $1,754,300.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs. These five-year agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.

BACKGROUND

Canada-Community Agreements with linguistic minority communities in Canada provide support for the communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec) to enhance their vitality and foster their development. Funding under the Agreements enables the communities to establish and maintain organizations that will allow them to fully contribute to economic, cultural, and social aspects of Canadian life. The Agreements allow communities to set their own development priorities and ensure that the best possible use is made of available funds.

The Agreement between Canada and the Francophone community of Saskatchewan was signed in December 1999, and provides $10.7 million over five years for the Francophone community.
