Government of Canada announces Funding for the Association des Scouts du Canada

MONTRÉAL, July 17, 2003 -- Pierre Pettigrew, Minister for International Trade and Member of Parliament (Papineau Saint-Denis), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $70,000 for the Association des Scouts du Canada (ASC).

Canadian Heritage is providing this funding to help the ASC offer French-language activities to Canada's minority-language Francophone communities throughout the 2003-04 fiscal year. The funds will support activities related to training, group leadership, and the development of resources, which will enable the Scouting movement to continue its support for the development of Francophone communities in minority situations.

"Scouting creates important links between family, school and the community. For generations, it has given young people the opportunity to participate in the development of their community, to acquire important values, and to gain a sense of belonging to their Francophone community," said Minister Pettigrew.

Established in 1969, the ASC offers young Canadians the opportunity to participate in Scouting in French, and through this organization, to contribute to their own personal growth on the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual levels. The ASC offers young people an original program designed to foster their sense of responsibility and self-reliance, and to prepare them to play an active role in society.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Official Languages Support Programs.

Funding for this project was provided for in the 2003 federal Budget.
