Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Association Canadienne Française de L'Ontario Conseil Regional Hamilton

HAMILTON, August 7, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $34,000 for the Association Canadienne Française de l'Ontario (ACFO) Conseil Regional Hamilton.

"The Francophone culture and language are essential components of our Canadian identity," said Minister Copps. "The Government of Canada is proud to support organizations such as the Association Canadienne Française de l'Ontario Conseil Regional Hamilton. As well as contributing to the development of Francophone communities all across Canada, this group helps build a strong and proud French-language community in the Greater Hamilton-Wentworth Area."

ACFO Conseil Regional Hamilton will use this funding to organize events with other Francophone communities in Brantford and Simcoe, in partnership with local schools and the Club canadien-français. In addition, ACFO Conseil Regional Hamilton will conduct a feasibility study for the encouragement of tourism, become a partner organization in Festival ARTFO, develop a Web site, and maintain services for Francophones in the Greater Hamilton-Wentworth Area.
Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Language Support Programs. These five-year agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
