Government of Canada Announces Funding to Two Francophone Groups in Newfoundland and Labrador

LABRADOR CITY, August 29, 2003 -- Lawrence O'Brien, Member of Parliament (Labrador), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $7,800 for two Francophone groups in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Linguistic duality is an important component of Canada's social fabric," said Mr. O'Brien. "The Government of Canada is committed to providing tools to the Francophone communities in minority situations that help them develop."

The Association Francophone du Labrador will receive $6,525 to organize - in partnership with the Centre éducatif l'Envol - activities related to arts, culture, and sport on a regular basis throughout the school year.

The Femmes Francophones de l'Ouest du Labrador will receive $1,275 to hold a workshop for its members on visualization and mental imagery in order to improve their health by reducing stress and conflicts, as well as to better manage their lives. The workshop will be held during celebrations for International Women's Day.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs. The five-year Canada-Community Agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
