Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders

ÎLES-DE-LA-MADELEINE, Septembre 2, 2003 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (Bonaventure-Gaspé-Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $73,500 for the Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support groups that work to develop official-language minority communities in Canada," said Mr. Farrah. "I would like to congratulate the members of the Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders, whose efforts enrich our country's linguistic and cultural diversity."

This funding will allow the organization to carry out work in the fields of health, social services, and the protection and development of culture and heritage. It will also allow the organization to offer technical assistance to various community groups that provide services to English-speaking Magdalen Islanders.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs. The five-year Canada-Community Agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
