Government of Canada announces funding for the Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples' Association

HUNTINGDON, August 20, 2003 -- Serge Marcil, Member of Parliament (Beauharnois-Salaberry), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $92,925 for the Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples' Association.

"Allowing Canadians to live in the official language of their choice is a priority for the Government of Canada," said Mr. Marcil. "I am proud to announce this funding for an organization that is working to help Anglophones in the southwest region of Quebec."

The funding will allow the Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples' Association to continue responding to the needs of the regional Anglophone community. Among other things, the organization will represent Anglophones at various government levels; provide information through its Web site, newsletter, and local newspapers; and promote the community's English cultural heritage.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs. These five-year agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
