Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador

ST. JOHN'S, September 19, 2003 -- Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Member of Parliament (Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $243,400 for the Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador Inc.

"The Government of Canada is committed to supporting groups that promote the development of Francophone communities in Canada," said Minister Byrne. "In 2004, major celebrations will occur all throughout Canada, and more specifically here in Atlantic Canada, to commemorate the arrival of the first French settlers in North America. These celebrations are made possible due to the dedication of groups and individuals who take to heart the promotion of the Acadian and Francophone culture."

The Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador Inc. will receive $223,400 to support projects and activities under its annual programming. As well, the group will receive $20,000 to develop multimedia promotional materials and official merchandise to commemorate its 30 years of existence toward the 2004 Acadian and Francophone celebrations.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs. These five-year agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities (Francophones outside Quebec and Anglophones in Quebec).

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
