36th International Granby Song Festival Is Well on its Way

OTTAWA, August 18, 2004 -- Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister Responsible for the Francophonie, Jacques Saada, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced funding for the Réseau national des galas de la chanson, which will allow six winners of the main French song contests in Canada to proceed to the semi-finals of the 36th annual International Granby Song Festival and to participate in professional workshops offered to the participants.

"The International Granby Song Festival allows new composers and performers to demonstrate their talent to the public and representatives of the recording and entertainment industries from home and abroad", said Minister Saada. "I extend my best wishes to the winners of this contest that, year after year, gives us an opportunity to discover this country's new Francophone artists."

Funding of $70,000 from the Department of Canadian Heritage will allow the winners of the Caraquet, Ontario Pop, and Chant'Ouest competitions to participate in one of the most important French-Canadian song contests, to have an unforgettable adventure with other semi-finalists in the Granby Song Festival, and to distinguish themselves on the national and international scenes.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the
Community Life component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding for this project was provided in the March 2004 federal budget.
