Government of Canada Announces Support for the Mouvement ontarien des femmes immigrantes francophones

OTTAWA, August 31, 2004 -- David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced funding of $40,000 for the Mouvement ontarien des femmes immigrantes francophones to encourage the participation of members of Francophone ethnocultural communities in various activities of their communities.

"It is important to offer newcomers all the resources they need to be able to integrate themselves and to grow and develop as quickly as possible in their community," said Mr. McGuinty. "The Government of Canada is proud to support organizations, such as the Mouvement ontarien des femmes immigrantes francophones, which makes every effort to help Francophones among Ontario's ethnocultural communities."

"Not only is linguistic duality a part of the foundation of our country since its earliest days, but it is also a sign of success and prosperity in the current international context," declared Minister Frulla. "Today's announcement is proof that our government is willing to give official language communities in a minority situation every opportunity to ensure their longevity and to play a major role in our society".

This funding will help the Mouvement offer women and men of ethnocultural immigrant communities a series of activities to strengthen the ties between them and to better make their voices heard in our country's decision-making process. These activities will include producing publicity materials to increase awareness, and organizing regional and provincial meetings.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
