Government of Canada funding for four Ottawa-Carleton Francophone groups

OTTAWA, September 8, 2004 -- Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (Ottawa-Vanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $112,500 in funding for four Francophone groups in the Ottawa-Carleton area.

"The four organizations receiving funding play an active role in the region. They work in priority areas for the community, like youth, culture and social integration," said Mr. Bélanger. "Their work helps improve the quality of life for local Francophones and encourages the continued development of the Franco-Ontarian community."

The following organizations will receive funding:

Ottawa-Carleton Economic and Social Council ($7,500)
Coopérative Ami Jeunesse ($35,000)
Regroupement des organismes du patrimoine Franco-Ontarien ($40,000)
Théâtre Action ($30,000)

These funds will allow the Ottawa-Carleton Economic and Social Council to undertake a project to facilitate the integration of Francophone immigrants. The Coopérative Ami Jeunesse will follow up on its feasability study for building a multi-purpose centre for Francophones in Ottawa West. In consultation with young people, the Regroupement des organismes du patrimoine Franco-Ontarien will design pillars to be installed at two historic sites from the age of New France. The organization will also provide regional, historical and tourist information. Théâtre Action will offer workshops for emerging artists.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Language Support Programs. The goal of these five-year agreements (1999-2004) is to support the development of official-language communities living in minority situations.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
