Government of Canada supports the Association culturelle du Haut Saint-Jean

EDMUNDSTON, September 8, 2004 -- Thanks to the support provided by the Government of Canada, the Association culturelle du Haut Saint-Jean will continue to ensure the development of Acadian and Francophone arts and culture in the northwest region of New Brunswick. Member of Parliament (MadawaskaÑRestigouche) Jean-Claude D'Amours, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $23,000 in funding to support the creation and presentation of cultural and artistic productions.

"The continued development of the Acadian and Francophone culture is ensured by the partnership between the Government of Canada and local community groups," said Mr. D'Amours. "The Acadian and Francophone community in New Brunswick is proud and it has taken the measures to ensure that future generations have access to services and activities in French in the only officially bilingual province in Canada."

"Strong and dynamic communities help make Canada a great place to live," said Minister Frulla. "The Government of Canada is committed to supporting groups, such as the Association culturelle du Haut Saint-Jean, that promote the development of Francophone communities."

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the CanadaÑNew BrunswickÑAcadian Community Agreement of the Official Languages Support Programs. The five-year Canada-Community Agreements (1999-2004) support the development of the official-language minority communities.

This funding supports the Official Languages Action Plan, announced in March 2003, which reaffirmed the Government of Canada's commitment to linguistic duality in Canada.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
