Government of Canada Supports the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations' New Publication

MONTRÉAL, September 29, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce--Lachine), Marlene Jennings, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $19,500 in funding for the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations. The funds will allow the organization to produce a guide for improving the reading and writing skills of young English-speaking students.

"The Federation's publication will enrich the range of resources available to young Canadians," said Ms. Jennings. "I am pleased to support this organization, which helps parents and teachers better fulfill their roles as educators."

"The education of tomorrow's citizens who contribute to society depends primarily on top-quality educational resources," said Minister Frulla. "Our Government is particularly concerned with educating students from official-language communities living in minority situations so they can contribute fully to the betterment of our society. I commend all those behind this initiative, which is perfectly in line with our goals."

Funding announced today will allow the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations to produce a guide to promote literacy skills among English-speaking students. Nearly 100 000 students will benefit from the guide.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
