Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia open Halifax Campus of the Université Sainte-Anne

HALIFAX, October 29, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, Nova Scotia Education Minister Jamie Muir, and the President of the Université Sainte-Anne, André Roberge, took part today in the official opening of the College and University Distance Learning Centre of the Université Sainte-Anne.

The Centre, which is the new Halifax Campus of the Université Sainte-Anne, is the result of a partnership between the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia. The two governments contributed an equal share of the $2.5 million funding for this project.

"Today, the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia are joining together to give young people the tools they need to receive high-quality French-language education and, thereby, to contribute to the vitality of their culture," said Minister Frulla. "With the official opening of the Centre, we are making a tangible contribution to strengthening the roots of Nova Scotia's Francophone community so that it can continue to flourish in every part of this province."

"Université Sainte-Anne is one of the most avant-garde institutions in terms of interactive teaching and distance learning and, with this project, it is taking full advantage of the latest technologies," Minister Muir added. "Our Government, and the members of our Acadian, Francophone and Anglophone communities, care very deeply about the growth of this Francophone university in the Halifax region. This funding will give students further opportunities to access high quality French-language college and university education."

"The opening of our Halifax Campus is a clear illustration of the vitality of our new institution," said Mr. Roberge. "The modern working and learning environment will enable students and staff to reach their full potential. None of this would be possible without the support of the different levels of government and, for this, I want to express my sincere gratitude."

The new Centre includes classrooms, meeting rooms, a computer centre, a student service centre, and administrative offices.

The Halifax Campus is the final component in the Université Sainte-Anne's network of learning centres, focussed around the university's main campus at Pointe-de-l'Église. A supplementary agreement in the context of the Canada-Nova Scotia Agreement on Minority-Language Education and on Second-Language Education led to the establishment of these campuses.
