Government of Canada Supports Nunavut's Francophone Community

Iqaluit, November 26, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Nunavut) Nancy Karetak-Lindell, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $242,550 in funding for the Association des francophones du Nunavut (AFN) and Garderie Les Petits Nanooks Daycare. The funding will enable these organizations to upgrade delivery of their services to Nunavut's French-speaking community.

"The Association des francophones du Nunavut is a vital and dynamic organization. Their community radio, CFRT-FM, is now celebrating its 10th anniversary," said Ms. Karetak-Lindell. "The Garderie Les Petits Nanooks Daycare provides daycare in French for interested families in Iqaluit."

"Nunavut can count on a Francophone community that is proud of its foundations," said Minister Frulla. "I am delighted that our government is able to help Francophones in the territory to live and flourish in their own language."

Of the funding announced today, AFN will receive $195,000 for its 2004-05 programming, enabling it to support its various committees and community partners working in the fields of education, communications, economics and health. Two AFN projects will also receive support: one developing the architectural design for the Community Centre ($26,000) and the other devoted to managing agreements ($14,550).

Garderie Les Petits Nanooks Daycare will receive $7,000 for the development of its francization kit, which will help children and their families to improve their French-language skills outside the daycare.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
