Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador extend their Agreement on Promotion of Official Languages for 2004-05

ST. JOHN'S, December 3, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, and Newfoundland and Labrador President of Treasury Board Loyola Sullivan today announced extension of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador General Agreement on the Promotion of Official Languages for the year 2004-05. The agreement involves $600,000 in funding.

"I am delighted at the continuing cooperation between the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador on promotion of official languages," said Minister Frulla. "Remarkable progress has been achieved to upgrade the quality of services offered in French, and we are carrying on our efforts to ensure continuity, here as in all the regions of Canada."

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador General Agreement on the Promotion of Official Languages seeks to offer services in the language of the minority community, and particularly to support the development of such services and to encourage the vitality of the Francophone community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"I am very pleased that the government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the government of Canada have approved the extension of an agreement for promoting Canada's two official languages in our province, said Minister Sullivan. This agreement is an essential tool as the Office of French Services continues to work at building our capacity to deliver French-language services and contribute to the vitality of our francophone communities."

The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador approved extension of the agreement for 2004-05 to ensure that current funding is maintained until a new bilateral, multi-year agreement is signed. The agreement calls for a contribution of $450,000 by the Government of Canada and $150,000 by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
