Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Franco-Albertan community

EDMONTON, September 17, 1994 A new agreement between the Federal Government and the francophone community of Alberta will give this community the tools it needs to manage its development effectively. This was the consensus today as the agreement was signed by Minister of Canadian Heritage Michel Dupuy and Paul Denis and Georges Arès, of the Association canadienne- française de l'Alberta. Federal Natural Resources Minister Anne McLellan also participated in the official ceremony.

The five-year agreement constitutes a new means for co-operation, complementing existing mechanisms for supporting the development of Alberta's francophone community. It provides multi-year funding for the Franco-Albertan community, defines the procedures which community groups will use in establishing their priorities and dividing up the available funds, and sets up a round table between the community and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

A contribution of $12 million from existing funds will be made by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the agreement.

Mr. Dupuy declared that the Federal Government is continuing, through this agreement, to support and promote the development of a dynamic Franco-Albertan community. He added that his department will continue to work with other partners, including all federal departments, to contribute to the growth and vitality of the Franco-Albertan community.

Funding for this initiative was provided in the February 1994 federal budget and is built into the existing fiscal framework. This announcement is an example of how the federal government is allocating its spending to better serve Canadians by making the best use of their tax dollars.
