Government of Canada supports the Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires francophones

OTTAWA, June 27, 2005 -- Minister for Internal Trade, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Member of Parliament (Ottawa-Vanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $250,000 in funding for the Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires francophones. The funds will enable the organization to prepare for a summit focussed on improving the quality of minority-language education.

"If we want to offer high-quality education to young people in official-language minority communities, all stakeholders must work as partners," said Mr. Bélanger. "I am proud that our government is supporting the Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires francophones in its preparations for this summit, which will bring together key players in education."

"We are committed to promoting the vitality of francophone communities throughout Canada," said Minister Frulla. "One of the best ways of achieving this is by making common cause, as we are doing today, so that young Francophones receive an education that helps them realize their dreams."

This funding will help the Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires francophones organize regional meetings to prepare for the summit on minority-language education.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
