Minister Gives Financial Support to French-Language Theatre Project in Sudbury

SUDBURY, September 6, 1995 The Honourable Michel Dupuy, Minister of Canadian Heritage, took advantage of his trip to Sudbury for the official opening of the Collège Boréal to announce that his Department is making a financial contribution toward the creation of a French-language theatre in this region.

The fruit of a partnership between the Collège Boréal and the Théâtre du Nouvel Ontario, the project to build a Francophone theatrical centre in Sudbury will contribute to the dissemination and influence of the French language and culture in Northern Ontario. The Department is supporting the proponents' efforts and encouraging them to forge ahead.

"This is an initiative that will provide a more solid foundation for theatre in French Ontario and one that merits the time, money and effort devoted to it," said Mr. Dupuy. "I appreciate the need for Francophones in minority situations to have cultural institutions that reflect their vitality and their aspirations."

The Department will contribute $1 million over three fiscal years. This amount will enable promoters to approach other partners in an effort to secure the funding necessary to carry out the project.

Funding for this project is included in the federal budget tabled in February 1995 and is an element of the financial framework already in place. This project shows how this government is setting its priorities to better serve Canadians and make rational use of public funds.
