National Francophone Week Begins in British Columbia

VANCOUVER, March 8, 1996 The Department of Canadian Heritage invites you to take part in National Francophonie Week (Semaine nationale de la francophonie), which will be celebrated in British Columbia from March 11 to 15, 1996.

The theme of the celebration is Francophone community and cultural identity. It is a time to reflect on our cultural identity and to recognize the diversity of Francophone cultural expression in Canada. It is a time to take pride in all that we share and all that we have in common.

Our diversity is our strength. Faced with growing economic globalization, Canada offers the world an example of a modern society, an officially bilingual and openly multicultural society, a society in the image of the world of tomorrow. The Francophonie is one of the most distinctive features of Canada, said the Honourable Sheila Copps, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage.

National Francophonie Week is an initiative of the Association canadienne d'éducation de langue française. Community organizations across the province have organized special activities to mark the occasion.

This year, on Wednesday, March 13, you are invited to Sinclair Centre, at 757 West Hastings Street in Vancouver, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., to meet with representatives from various federal departments and community organizations to learn about their programs and activities.

It's free, so don't miss it! Francophones and Francophiles, we're looking forward to seeing you there.
