Canada and Nova Scotia announce additional funding provided to complete construction of "La Picasse"

HALIFAX, May 14, 1996 Additional funding will be provided to complete the construction of the La Picasse francophone centre in Petit de Grat, Nova Scotia. This was jointly announced today by Cape Breton Highlands-Canso MP Francis LeBlanc, on behalf of the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, Acting Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for St-Henri- Westmount and MLA Richie Mann, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, on behalf of Education and Culture Minister John MacEachern.

This facility is very important to the people of this community and I am pleased to announce funding that will ensure its successful completion , said Mr. Mann.

The Department of Education and Culture will provide an additional $225,000 and the federal Department of Canadian Heritage will contribute another $675,000 to complete construction of a community library, a learning centre, and other facilities associated with the project.

The support provided by both levels of government to this project clearly demonstrates our joint efforts to promote culture and education in the community , said Mr. LeBlanc. This confirms the federal commitment to the development and enhancement of Francophone communities across Canada.

In conjunction with this funding commitment, the Province has requested a joint-use agreement with the community group steering the project to outline the roles and responsibility for the operation of the facility. In keeping with arrangements made with other learning centres across the province, the Department of Education and Culture will have clear title to the Collège de l'Acadie.

The federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 1996 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
