Sault Ste. Marie Museum
Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario) Région touristique : Algoma District
Construction on this heritage building was begun in 1902 and completed by 1906 for use as a Post Office. The work was done by local craftsmen and builders, using sandstone excavated from the canal Locks; while the distintive clock was created in England (installed in 1912). Its Ontario eclectic architecture is a combination of styles with Romanesque arched windos, magnificent oak staircase, and an exquisite skylight.
In 1965 the Sault Ste. Marie and 49th Field Regiment formed a Historical Society and housed it's collection at the Armoury. In 1983 the municipality purchased the Post Office building from the Federal government to be used as a Museum. Currently, a non-profit managment board facilitates the operations of the museum. The Museum tells the story of Sault Ste. Marie through the exploration of five exhibit galleries that depict the heritage from Pre-historic times to modern times. Travel back in time to experience a replica of a First Nation birchbark dwelling, a blacksmith shop, a glimpse of early settlement in Northern Ontario circa 1912. Meet Francis H. Clergue, the visionary who led the "Soo" into the Industrial Age. Sports, Marine and Military memories are all represented in each of their own Galleries. Children of all ages will enjoy the "Discovery Gallery" with its artifacts and collections that invite you to touch, explore and have fun.
