Revelstoke Museum and Archives
Revelstoke (Colombie-Britannique) Région touristique : Thompson/Okanagan
The Revelstoke Museum and Archives is located in the heritage Post Office and Customs building, built in 1926. The site for this building was chosen in 1911 by Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier during a visit to Revelstoke, in order to satisfy the citizens of both the "upper" and "lower" towns. The post office building, which has housed the Revelstoke Museum and Archives since 1974, is now part of the revitalized downtown core, where the restored heritage buildings proudly proclaim our past. Revelstoke Museum and Archives has two floors of exhibit space and an archives and research room. The collection consists of artifacts and archives from Revelstoke and district and showcase our exciting history from the early days of exploration; the gold rush and subsequent mining; the coming of the Canadian Pacific Railway; the development of the city and the many activities and events that occured here, including Revelstoke's glory days as a Ski-jumping mecca. Children's activities are available throughout the museum, including scavenger hunts, matching games, puppet theatre, colouring sheets, etc. A new Heritage Garden, opened in 2004 on the lot adjacent to the Museum showcases the agricultural history of this region and provides a pleasant spot for a picnic.

The collection is primarily from our collection area which includes the areas north to Boat Encampment, west to Sicamous, south to Trout Lake and east to Donald. It covers the period from the Big Bend Gold Rush of 1865 to the present. Among our more unique artifacts are a blaze cut from a cedar tree relating to the travels of the S.S. Forty-Nine on the Columbia River during 1865 and 1866, and a fur press built in 1911 to handle the local fur market. Displays are changed at least annually and reflect various aspects of local history and development.
