Established in 1912, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is Western Canada's oldest public art gallery, mandated to develop and maintain Manitoba's visual arts heritage. As one of Canada's leading galleries, it collects and exhibits works of art by Manitoba, Canadian, and international artists. The WAG is also the home of the world's largest collection of contemporary Inuit art, some of which is always on display.
Exhibitions are accompanied by informative wall panels, brochures, articles in the Gallery publication Tableau, and catalogues--all designed to guide visitors to a new appreciation of the art they are viewing. Tours conducted by trained Gallery guides, and often by the artists themselves, bring a new dimension to visitors' enjoyment of the exhibitions.

The WAG's collection of decorative arts is one of the most important in Western Canada, particularly in the areas of 18th and 19th century English porcelain, early Canadian silver, glass, and Canadiana. Although the collection is historical, new emphasis is now being given to 20th century works.

The WAG's collection ranges from 16th century tapestries and panel paintings to 20th century videos. It encompasses paintings, prints, and drawings;sculpture; and a comprehensive collection of master work photographs. Among the Gallery's treasures is the Gort Collection of late Gothic and Northern Renaissance panel paintings and tapestries.
