The IFD's Mandate

Role and mandate of the Department and the IFD

The Department of Canadian Heritage's mission is to enhance Canada's involvement and influence within the cultural International Francophonie in the following areas: sport, culture and heritage, communications, content on the information highway, human rights, publishing and the promotion of cultural diversity.

In partnership with Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC), Canadian Heritage (PCH) has created the International Francophonie Directorate (IFD), whose role is to make the Department's expertise available for cultural activities and projects in the International Francophonie. In concrete terms, the IFD will act both as a catalyst for opportunities and as the liaison between PCH and International Francophonie institutions, namely: the International Organization of La Francophonie, the Intergovernmental Agency of La Francophonie (AIF-Agence intergouvernementale de la Francophonie), the Conference of Youth and Sport Ministers sharing the use of French (CONFÉJES-Conférence des ministres de la jeunesse et des sports des pays ayant le français en partage) and the Games of La Francophonie International Committee (CIJF-Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie).

In addition to its policy and research development mandate, the IFD is responsible for coordinating the participation of Team Canada's athletes and artists in the Games of La Francophonie (JDLF), which are held every four years. It also oversees the Government of Canada's involvement in TV5, the international Francophone television network.
