Renewable Energy

MNR provides opportunities to develop electricity from renewable resources on Crown land, such as wind power and waterpower, while ensuring for the conservation of biodiversity and the use of Ontario's natural resources in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Development of renewable energy resources will help:

  • ensure a reliable supply of electricity for a growing population
  • improve air quality
  • reduce green house gas emissions that contribute to climate change
  • promote economic development in Ontario, especially for Northern and Aboriginal communities

Providing opportunities to generate electricity from renewable energy resources on Crown land will also help the Ontario government achieve its commitments to:

  • increase by 10% the amount electricity being generated from renewable resources by the year 2010
  • eliminate the province's coal-fired electricity generation by the year 2009
