The winner of the best HIV/AIDS infomercial has been announced. Voters picked their favourite from the top five pre-selected entries. Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands were all represented, but in the end it was the Netherlands with "Dance4Life" that took it.
The EU has launched an awareness-raising initiative culminating in the
"Night of the HIV/AIDS TV commercials" in Brussels on 30 November. The
message: AIDS is still with us, so protect yourself. A prize will be awarded
for the best HIV/AIDS infomercial.
New research projects for the protection of human and animal health are to
receive an additional €28.3m of funding as part of the EU's Sixth Research
Framework Programme. The decision, announced by the Commission on 17 October,
finances seventeen avian and pandemic flu projects focusing on specific needs
identified by the UN's World Health Organisation, the World Organisation for
Animal Health, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
The European Commission has unveiled a proposal aimed at strengthening the
Single Market for Aviation and ensuring a consistent application of EU
legislation in all Member States (18 July).
The price of making and receiving calls when travelling in the EU may soon
drop significantly. If the regulation proposed by the Commission on
12 July is approved by the Council and the Parliament, the cost of using a
mobile phone in another EU Member State will be reduced by up to 70%, saving
consumers an estimated €5 billion a year.
The European Commission unveiled an ambitious EU Action Plan on 22 May that
aims to clarify the responsibilities of the EU and its Member States in halting
biodiversity loss by 2010.
