Ballistic Protective Visor

32646-600-24 CTS - May 11, 2004

INTRODUCTION

Canada has a requirement to maintain multi-purpose, combat-capable forces that are equipped and structured to meet security and defence objectives. To fulfill this role, the Canadian Forces (CF) must provide items of operational necessity to address the many physical threats that characterize modern, year-round, global operations.

THE CLOTHE THE SOLDIER PROJECT

In September 1996, Treasury Board formally approved the Clothe the Soldier (CTS) project with the mandate to acquire and issue, as expeditiously as possible, the highest priority items of individual operational clothing and equipment for CF personnel conducting land operations. The project was funded to enhance survivability and sustainability by providing improved items that offered upgraded protection, greater comfort, flexibility and compatibility with other items in the operational inventory.

BALLISTIC PROTECTIVE VISOR

The Ballistic Protective Visor (BPV) is one of five ballistic fragmentation protective projects under the CTS omnibus project. The BPV has been designed to provide both ocular and upper facial protection against fragments, flying debris and other battlefield threats for CF personnel conducting land operations. The visor has also been designed to fit the in-service Helmet Attachment Kit that has been developed for the CG 634 Soldier’s Helmet. The BPV is also fully compatible with in-service CTS Ballistic Eyewear (BEW), which incorporates solar and ultraviolet (UV) eye protection for daylight use and a clear UV lens for use at night. The combination of these two compatible items when worn together will afford the individual greatly enhanced ballistic protection against low energy fragments. While BEW will be issued to all CF Regular and Reserve force personnel conducting land operations, the BPV will be issued as required in hostile environments and while training in simulated threat scenarios.

CONCLUSION

ReVision Eyewear Incorporated, Montreal, Quebec will deliver 15,200 Ballistic Protective Visors commencing winter 2005 with a final delivery date in spring 2006. The BPV is the 20th CTS item out of 24 to reach contract award.
