Directorate of Land Synthetic Environments (DLSE)

BG–04.043 - November 29, 2004

The Directorate of Land Synthetic Environments (DLSE) at CFB Kingston, formerly known as the Army Simulation Centre, provides realistic and demanding battle simulation in support of Army training. Using scientific methods supported by models and simulations, DLSE also designs and validates combat development solutions for the Army. DLSE is the Army's centre of excellence for all simulation activities, including the development of simulation policy and coordinating the use of simulation throughout the Land Forces.

DLSE was housed in building B-19, a 1,115 square-metre building severely deficient in office space and storage, which did not provide space for in-house training or experimentation. The experimentation component of DLSE was separately housed in the Grant Building. Simulation exercises were held at Normandy Hall and/or Thompson Drill Hall. Each exercise required the loading, set up and re-packing of equipment from the unit to these facilities.

NEW FACILITY

The former Anderson Gym was vacated after the expansion of the Sir Archibald Macdonald facility at the Royal Military College of Canada and was scheduled for demolition. However, the urgent requirement for space for the DLSE gave new life to the building.

The renovation of the former Anderson Gym co-locates the Land Force Doctrine and Training System Directorate of Land Synthetic Environments in its entirety and the Director General Land Combat Development staff responsible for concept and doctrine development.

The purpose-built, 4,804 square-metre facility will provide DLSE experimentation and training elements with adequate offices, computer labs and mock-up training areas and will permit the conduct of complex experimentation in support of the development and modelling of doctrine and tactics, and the fielding of equipment in the Army.

The consolidation will free up facilities in B-19, the Grant Building and Fort Frontenac for other CFB Kingston units.
