ASU London Consolidation

BG–04.048 - December 23, 2004

AREA SUPPORT UNIT (ASU) LONDON

ASU London supports 31 Canadian Brigade Group, its 15 subordinate units located throughout south-western Ontario, three naval reserve divisions, the Central Region Cadet Detachment (CRCD) London and thirty cadet corps, with a total strength of 300 Regular Force personnel, 2,800 Reserve Force personnel, 300 members of the Cadet Instructor Cadre and 5,000 cadets.

EXISTING FACILITIES

The Highbury Complex consists of six buildings with a total floor space of 16,186 square metres on a 7.8 hectare site. The Highbury Complex is in need of general structural repairs and upgrades of electrical and heating systems to address health and safety of personnel and quality of life issues. The largest building - the maintenance, supply and transport building - was built in 1941. It has been deemed beyond economic renovation and repair, and, at a total floor space of 15,697 square metres, it is twice the size needed to achieve the mission of the ASU.

The Wolseley Barracks site consists of 13 buildings on a 12.76 ha site. Two of these buildings are designated as heritage buildings. One of these, A Block, currently houses the dental clinic, which will be moved to allow additional space for the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) museum.

CONSOLIDATION

The Highbury Complex infrastructure will be replaced by the construction of a new 7,500 square-metre facility in phase 1. The renovation of approximately 5,000 square metres of existing facilities at Wolseley Barracks will take place during phase 2, which will be tendered in early 2005.

Phase 1 will include the construction of the new technical support complex, including the new relocated medical clinic, the demolition of building 52, and upgrades of site works on the site. Phase 2 will renovate Building 50, currently housing ASU London and 31 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters.

The consolidation will allow for the demolition of 18,133 square metres of existing floor space at both sites and disposal of the entire Highbury Complex and 7.8 hectares of land.
