Digging in at Shearwater: Maritime Helicopter Training Facility Construction Begins

Apr. 25, 2005

Sikorsky Helicopter

SHEARWATER, N.S. – Construction of a high-tech training facility for the new Maritime Helicopter began yesterday with the official sod-turning ceremony at 12 Wing Shearwater. The new training facility is part of the contract awarded to Sikorsky for 20 years of in-service support for the H92 helicopter.

The Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, joined the Department of National Defence, Maritime Helicopter contractor Sikorsky and partners L-3 Communications MAS and PCL Constructors to mark this important step for the Maritime Helicopter Project.

"Preparations for the arrival of our new Maritime Helicopters have begun," said Defence Minister Bill Graham. “We’re laying the groundwork to ensure that the Canadian Forces have the helicopters they need, the training they require, and the infrastructure to support them, in a timely fashion."

"This new high tech training facility at 12 Wing Shearwater will provide tremendous economic benefits for our region," Fisheries and Oceans Minister Geoff Regan said. "It's expected that over 160 new jobs will be created by the centre, which will be operational in April 2008."

"Once completed, this training facility will turn out helicopter aircrews that are operationally ready and able to take on the challenges of defending Canada’s interests both at home and abroad," said General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff.

Sikorsky has been awarded two separate contracts; the first contract, worth $1.8 billion, covers the acquisition of 28 fully integrated, certified and qualified helicopters with their mission systems installed. The second contract, valued at $3.2 billion, is for the 20-year in-service support for the helicopters, including the construction of the training facility, which will house flight simulators and other training devices.
