Government of Canada Announces Funding for Uci Mountain Bike World Cup at Mont-Sainte-Anne

OTTAWA, June 25, 2003 -- Paul DeVillers, Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) today announced funding of $15,000 to the International Cycling Union (UCI) Mountain Bike World Cup at Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec.

"The Government of Canada is proud to help give Canadian cyclists the opportunity to take part in such a high-level competition," said Mr. DeVillers. "The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Mont-Sainte-Anne will enhance the sport of cycling, both in Canada and internationally."

The funding, provided through Sport Canada's International Single Sport Hosting Program, will go towards the cost of organizing this international-calibre competition in the Mont-Sainte-Anne region.

"The Canadian cycling team has had tremendous success, and this competition will give Canadians a chance to cheer on our athletes," added Mr. DeVillers. "I wish all the participants the best of luck."

In 2002-03, the Government of Canada contributed $1,346,000 to the Canadian Cycling Association, and provided direct support to 38 cyclists on the national team, in the form of monthly contributions through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program.
