Denis Coderre Announces $1.2 Million Support for 2002 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Preparation

OTTAWA, February 13, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today announced support to assist Canada's Olympic and Paralympic teams as they prepare for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games.

"Canada has a strong tradition as a winter sporting nation," said Mr. Coderre. "The performances of our athletes at winter sport events continue to reflect that tradition. The Government of Canada is committed to maintaining and improving the success of our Canadian athletes."

The $1.2 million in funding will be provided to National Sport Organizations with athletes and teams already qualified or qualifying for the Games. The money will support activities such as extended training and competition opportunities, additional coaching support, game preparation, as well as support for other technical specialists.

This amount complements the support that sport organizations already receive from the Government through Sport Canada for the training and development of high performance athletes. All sports on the Olympic and Paralympic programs for Salt Lake City are eligible for support.

The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games will be held from February 8 to 24 and the Paralympics will be held from March 7 to March 16. They will bring together athletes from approximately 80 countries. Canada is expected to send a team of approximately 185 athletes to the Olympics and 35 to the Paralympics.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
