Copps Announces Funding for 2001 and 2003 Canada Games

OTTAWA, April 26, 1996 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today advised her provincial and territorial counterparts that the current federal portion of the funding framework for the Canada Games will be maintained for the 2001 Games to be held in Ontario and the 2003 Games in New Brunswick.

The Canada Games play a vital role in the development of Canada's young athletes, and in strengthening Canada, said Minister Copps. The Games are often a talented young athlete's first major competition, and they are also a great way for young people to discover our country. The Canada Games help young Canadians bring out the best in themselves and build bonds with one another.

Agreements already in place for upcoming Games in Brandon, Manitoba in 1997 and Corner Brook, Newfoundland in 1999 are based on federal support averaging $8 million each. The level of federal funding will not change for the Ontario (2001) or New Brunswick (2003) Games.

Funding for this initiative was provided in the March 1996 federal budget and is built into the existing fiscal framework. This announcement is an example of how the federal government is allocating its spending to better serve Canadians by making the best use of their tax dollars.
