Government of Canada Provides Funding for Two Prince Edward Island Organizations

CHARLOTTETOWN, January 26, 2004 -- The Honourable Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $30,000 for the 2004 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games and the Capital Commission of Prince Edward Island to enable them to provide services in both official languages.

"The Government of Canada's Official Languages Support Programs exist to help Canadians, from across the country, to live and work in their official language of choice," said Mr. Murphy.

"The funding we are announcing today is an excellent example of the vital role the Government plays in encouraging the development of Francophone and Anglophone communities in minority situations," added Minister Chalifour Scherrer.

The 2004 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games receives $5,000 through the Assistance for Interpretation and Translation Program, which assists organizations in offering translation and simultaneous interpretation during important public meetings, or translation of documents of interest to members of the organization and to the general public. The funds will be used for the translation of documents into both official languages.

The Capital Commission of Prince Edward Island receives $25,000 through the Development of Official-Languages Services Program, which assists organizations in acquiring the capability to offer or to improve their services in both official languages. The funds will assist this non-profit organization to expand and improve the services it offers in both official languages.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
