Denis Coderre Congratulates a Pioneer in Mountain Biking

OTTAWA, February 22, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today congratulated Marc Lemay, recipient of the Award of Merit from the International Cycling Union (UCI). The UCI's highest distinction, the Award of Merit recognizes contributions made to the development of cycling in the world.

"We are proud to have a pioneer such as Mr. Lemay in our Canadian sport community," said Mr. Coderre. "He opened the way to the sport of mountain biking and helped develop this sport in Canada and around the world. Without a doubt, he is a fine example to emulate, not only for young cyclists but for all Canadians."

Mr. Lemay has been working in the cycling field for more than 26 years. Since 1990, he has been president of the International Mountain Biking Commission of the UCI. Mr. Lemay has also been a race organizer, president of the Fédération québécoise de cyclisme and president of the Canadian Cycling Federation.
