Denis Coderre Salutes Women in SportOTTAWA, March 8, 2000 -- The Honourable Denis Coderre, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), today praised the important contribution Canadian women are making in amateur sport.Mr. Coderre's comments also coincide with Canada's participation in the 2nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) World Conference on Women in Sport, in Paris, France being held between March 6 and 8, 2000. The Conference focuses on the accomplishments and future challenges of women in sport while also celebrating the 100th anniversary of women's participation in the Olympic Games. "On this International Women's Day, I would like to salute the many women who, as leaders, coaches, officials and athletes, have made a difference in creating a Canadian sport system that is more equitable and accessible to women across the country. A number of these leaders are representing Canada at the IOC's conference," said Mr. Coderre. In highlighting the positive developments in the area of women in sport, Mr. Coderre particularly praised the work of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS). As well, he highlighted Canada's key role in the International Working Group on Women in Sport. "The Government of Canada will continue to work with the sport community in the area of equity and access as it is a priority both internationally and here at home," said Mr. Coderre. As part of its leadership role in the area, Canada will host the 2002 World Conference on Women in Sport from May 16 to 19, 2002 in Montréal. Information: Patrick L.
