Description

This exhibition showcases some of the best-known prints from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) with a focus on selected works by Kenojuak Ashevak, Pudlo Pudlat, Parr, Pitaloosie Saila, Pauta Saila, Kananginak Pootoogook, Sheojuk Etidlooie, Kingmeata Etidlooie, Pitseolak Ashoona, Lucy Qinnuayuak, Kiakshuk, Tudlik, and many other artists.

Kinngait – translated from the Inuit language of Inuktitut, as “mountains” – is the first community in the Canadian Arctic to produce drawings and prints, and has essentially set the standard for graphic art by Inuit artists. Kinngait artists are noted for both their graphics and large-scale stone sculpture inspired by representation. Popular themes in both media include the concept of transformation between shaman and spirit helper or spirit animal, the legend of Sedna [the sea goddess], depictions of the traditional semi-nomadic hunting lifestyle and the elements of contemporary hamlet life in addition to a myriad of other subjects and styles personal to each individual artist.
