![]() Waterton Lakes National ParkIssued:Tuesday, November 20, 2007 12:48Valid Until:Until Further NoticeBulletin Area:This bulletin covers Waterton Lakes National Park, including the Continental Divide area.
Synopsis:Regular avalanche bulletins will begin in early December or sooner, depending on snow conditions. Not a lot of snowpack information is currently available, a short update of current conditions follows;Winter is developing slowly, with generally little snow accumulating in most locations. Snowline is still fairly high, with only a few centimetres of hard, crusty snow at Little Prairie at 1650m. North and easterly facing slopes at treeline and into the alpine have up to 50cm of snow, although many areas are windswept and stripped bare of snow. Avalanches could occur on steeper lee slopes and gullies where snow has been deposited. Watch for signs of isolated slabs in these locations, such as hollow snow sounds, whumphing or cracking. Avalanche Activity:Late October snowfalls produced a mid-sized avalanche from the northeast bowl of Cloudy Ridge. The start zone was at about 2500m on a steep easterly-facing slope. No recent activity has been observed.Outlook:Cooler temperatures, light winds, and little chance of snow in the current forecasts.Travel Conditions:Expect to walk to treeline on five to ten centimetres of crusty snow. Recent windstorms have left a lot of trees across trails in the backcountry.
