Dhaliwal Announces Funding of $38,000 for the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE, January 23, 2003 -- The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada and Member of Parliament for Vancouver South-Burnaby, on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $38,000 for Action Against Racism, a northern outreach program of the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to offer support for this program, which emphasizes the values Canadians share to create a just and equitable society," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "The partnerships developed through Action Against Racism will result in developing key educational tools for northen communities."

"Eliminating racism and discrimination is a primary direction of the Multiculturalism Policy. Providing support to this project helps to engage communities and move Canadians to find strategies to stop racism and fight discrimination," said Ms. Augustine

The program will consist of a series of four one-day sessions on strategies against racism in the communities of Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Mackenzie, and Terrace. Action Against Racism will enable local organizations to develop innovative networks and partnerships to address racism in northern British Columbia. The initiative will help increase awareness of racism's impact, and develop important anti-racism educational and training resources for use in these communities.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, which falls under the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.Funding for this program was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
