Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Kelowna Art Gallery

KELOWNA, February 24, 2003 -- Senator Ross Fitzpatrick, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $5,000 for the Kelowna Art Gallery Association, to help with costs related to borrowing the art collection, The Changing Land: Modern British Landscape Painting 1900 - 1950, from the National Gallery of Canada.

"I am pleased that the Government of Canada is able to help the Kelowna Art Gallery borrow this exhibit," said Minister Copps. "Increased circulation of travelling exhibitions such as this one is essential to reach a diverse audience. This exhibit will also provide a unique opportunity for visitors of the Kelowna Art Gallery to view a selection of significant works from the National Gallery's permanent collection."

The exhibit features 35 paintings by artists who dominated the first half of the 20th century in England, including Walter Sickert, Augustus John, and Spencer Gore. The works selected offer a rich visual summary of a changing land and people. They document the artistic shifts between rural and urban landscapes, the strong reactions to continental and North American schools, and the stylistic paths and subjects adopted by artists.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
