Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Caravan World Rhythms Society

VANCOUVER, March 21, 2003 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $45,000 for the Caravan World Rhythms Society to help finance its year-round program of world music and dance.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support this new organization whose mission is to provide high-quality cultural entertainment with artists from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds," said Dr. Fry. "Caravan World Rhythms' programming offers Canadians an opportunity to interact and connect with a great variety of cultural communities."

As part of its year-round programming, the Caravan World Rhythms Society will present thematic festivals and concert series, as well as audience development and outreach activities. The Society will also offer master classes with visiting artists, such as a throat singing workshop by Central Asia's Huun Hu'ur Tu: Tuvan Throat Singers and Musicians. There will also be a monthly interactive local and world music series at the Roundhouse Community Centre. The audience will be able to participate and learn about different musical and dance genres.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation program. Arts Presentation Canada seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
