Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Kamloops Art Gallery

KAMLOOPS, March 21, 2003 -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (Vancouver-South-Burnaby), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $54,500 for the Kamloops Art Gallery.

"The Government of Canada is committed to support facilities like the Kamloops Art Gallery, which enrich our communities' cultural life and create a legacy of artistic excellence," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "It is essential to invest in the creative potential of arts and heritage organizations in order to build an innovative and diverse country."

Funding of $41,500 was provided for the Economic Capacity Building: A Community-Wide Strategy project. This project will consist of studying the economic impact of cultural assets on the local economy, and developing a business plan for the Kamloops Art Gallery. An additional $13,000 in funding was provided to renovate the facility and diversify the gallery collections. The project will improve the studio area through enhanced gallery lighting, seating and educational kiosks.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Cultural Spaces Canada program and the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability program. These two programs are part of a $568-million investment in the arts and culture, announced by the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage, on May 2, 2001.
Funding for the initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
