Government of Canada Announces Funding for Legal Studies Program of University of Alberta and the Society of Friends of the Ukranian Folklore Centre

EDMONTON, March 22, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine today announced
$60,678 in funding to the Legal Studies Program of the University of Alberta, to help finance their project called Diversity in On-line Civic Participation and $300,000 to the Society of Friends of the Ukrainian Folklore Centre, to help finance their Local Culture and Diversity on the Prairies project.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support these two community-centred projects that will help advance the goals of Canada's Multiculturalism Policy," said Secretary of State Augustine.

The Diversity in On-line Civic Participation project will help members of ethnocultural communities participate in Government of Canada on-line consultations and policy-issue discussions. It will also help ethnocultural communities develop strategies to organize their own on-line consultations.

The Local Culture and Diversity on the Prairies project's goal is to contribute to Canadians' understanding of diversity and the growth of local community life in Canada. The project will document everyday life, ethnic identity and regional variation among people of Ukrainian, French, German, and English heritage on the prairies prior to 1939.

Canada's Multiculturalism Program promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism program. Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
